Zidane explains

Zidane spoke about the headbutt incident for the first time.

France captain Zinedine Zidane was sent off in Sunday's World Cup final defeat for headbutting defender Marco Materazzi in the chest.

The midfield star, who has now retired from football, appeared on French television on Wednesday to explain his actions.

Here is a translation of what he told the TV channel Canal Plus about the Materazzi incident.

Interviewer: You know the Italian players well because you played in Italy for five years. Did you have any problem with any of them beforehand?

Zinedine Zidane: Not at all. You always have friction with certain players...that is the game, it has always been like that. But I never had any clashes with anyone.

Interviewer: Nor Materazzi?

Zinedine Zidane: No, never. There was nothing beforehand and nothing in the match until he started pulling my jersey.

He grabbed my shirt and I told him to stop. I told him if he wanted I'd swap it with him at the end of the match.

That is when he said some very hard words, which were harder than gestures. He repeated them several times. It all happened very quickly and he spoke about things which hurt me deep down.

Interviewer: Everyone wants to know exactly what he said...

Zinedine Zidane: They were very serious things, very personal things.

Interviewer: About your mother and your sister?

Zinedine Zidane: Yes. They were very hard words. You hear them once and you try to move away.

But then you hear them twice, and then a third time... I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions. I would rather have taken a blow to the face than hear that.

Interviewer: He said these things about your mother and sister two or three times?

Zinedine Zidane: Yes. I reacted and of course it is not a gesture you should do. I must say that strongly.

It was seen by two or three billion people watching on television and millions and millions of children.

It was an inexcusable gesture and to them, and the people in education whose job it is to show children what they should and shouldn't do, I want to apologise.

Interviewer: You apologise to them but do you really regret having done it?

Zinedine Zidane: I can't regret it because if I do it would be like admitting that he was right to say all that. And above all, it was not right.

We always talk about the reaction, and inevitably it must be punished. But if there is no provocation, there is no reaction.

First of all you have to say there is provocation, and the guilty one is the one who does the provoking. The response is to always punish the reaction, but if I react, something has happened.

Do you imagine that in a World Cup final like that, with just 10 minutes to go to the end of my career, I am going to do something like that because it gives me pleasure?

Interviewer: No of course not. But at the moment you exploded...

Zinedine Zidane: There was provocation, and it was very serious, that is all. My action was inexcusable but you have to punish the real culprit, and the real culprit is the one who provoked it. Voila.

Fifa investigates Zidane red card

Fifa is to investigate Zinedine Zidane's dramatic sending off during Sunday's World Cup final in Berlin.

The Frenchman was dismissed in extra-time for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi which happened seconds after the Italian apparently insulted him.

Materazzi has denied calling Zidane a "terrorist" or insulting his mother.

Fifa will now launch an investigation into Zidane's conduct to enable it to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident as exactly as possible.

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words with 10 minutes left of extra-time before Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.

Materazzi defended himself on Tuesday in the Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport, when he said: "It was the kind of insult you will hear dozens of times and just slips out of the ground.

"I didn't call Zidane a terrorist and certainly didn't mention his mother."

Zidane, who was born and grew up in Marseille, is the son of Algerian immigrants and has suffered taunts about his heritage throughout his football career.

But Materazzi added: "I am ignorant, I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is; my only terrorist is her," he said pointing to his 10-month-old daughter.

"I did not bring up Zidane's mother; for me a mother is sacred."

Materazzi and Zidane became involved in a verbal spat with 10 minutes to go in extra-time with France and Italy drawing 1-1 in the World Cup final.

After Materazzi's insult Zidane shoved his head into the Italian's chest and was sent off, with Italy going on to win the match 5-3 on penalties.

"I held his shirt, for only a few seconds," said Materazzi, who had scored Italy's equaliser after Zidane put France ahead from the penalty spot.

"He turned towards me and scoffed at me, looking at me with super arrogance, up and down.

"He said 'if you really want my shirt, you can have it later.'

"It's true, I shot back with an insult."

Just what did Materazzi say to provoke this reaction from Zidane?

Media organisations across Europe have been trying to decipher what Materazzi said to provoke such an extreme reaction from Zidane.

But it remains unclear exactly what was said and the BBC has broadcast two different versions.

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.

Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."

Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."

這一段影片實在令人不寒而慄。地點在柏林的國會大廈前。怎麼看都像印地安那瓊斯博士衝出來和希特勒打照面的那個場景。

這首德國國歌說來可是世界名曲。旋律取自國小音樂課本中所稱「交響曲之父」海頓爹爹，當初他寫來當成奧地利的國歌"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser"。後來海頓也將這段旋律用於他的第62號C大調弦樂四重奏op. 76, no. 3。

這大概是全世界國歌作曲者來頭最大的了吧。

HAMBURG, Germany -- I still remember the first time I saw the best soccer player of his generation: June 23, 1996, France vs. Holland, European Championship quarterfinals. We were staying at the house of my wife's uncle Gérard in Briançon, France, when a prematurely balding figure named Zinédine Zidane appeared on the television screen.

Uncle Gérard and I communicate in a sort of soccer-y Franglish, and this is what he said when he turned to me that day: "That is Zidane. Genial!"

A genius.

He sure didn't look like one. There was the whole hair-loss issue, of course, and Zidane wasn't particularly fast or strong, nor was he very dangerous in the air. But with a ball at his feet he could do the most magical things: all sorts of unpredictable drags and feints, feather-weighted passes, 360-degree spins that left defenders tackling his jetwash.

There was only one problem: Zizou couldn't win the big game. His nickname was Le Chat Noir, the Black Cat, and Euro '96 was no different. France survived the Dutch on penalties the first day I saw him, but Les Bleus would fall in the semis to the Czech Republic.

That all changed on July 12, 1998. On a glorious summer night at the Stade de France, Les Bleus did the unthinkable, upsetting Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup final. And so, too, did Zizou, who not only scored the first two goals but did so with his head. I still have the next day's front page of L'Equipe, the French sports daily, in my office at home. The gigantic headline reads, simply, Pour L'Eternité. For Eternity.

Perhaps one reason I get emotional thinking about Zizou is because I have my own story from that night in Paris. As a 24-year-old rookie writing my first big magazine story, I made a huge mistake, leaving my laptop back at my apartment near the Bastille in Paris. Little did I know that more than three million Parisians would clog the streets that night, stopping traffic in its tracks.

Stuck in a motionless bus at 2 a.m., I finally got out near the Arc de Triomphe --where Merci Zizou was being projected onto its facade -- and began walking, dodging the hordes on the Champs Elysees as I desperately tried to imagine a story that would put Zidane's historic feat in the proper perspective.

Over the next three hours, as I walked through the most raucous French celebration since the Liberation, the words started to tumble out, and I would stop and write them in my notebook:

In Saint-Denis, the Paris suburb where the French once buried their kings, a new one ascended last week. ...

By the time I got back to the apartment at 5 a.m., I had already come up with more than half of a 2,000-word magazine story on Zidane that was due just a few hours later. Eight years on, I still give Zidane the credit for being the muse I needed that night when I could have blown my chance at this writing gig. Merci, Zizou.

In a sense Zidane has been playing with house money ever since. He led France to the European title in 2000, earning Les Bleus comparisons with some of the best teams of all time. But an injured Zidane was the symbol of France's disastrous 2002 World Cup -- no goals in three games -- and Zizou's reign appeared over for good when his team bowed out to Greece in the quarterfinals of Euro 2004 and his Real Madrid teams stopped winning trophies.

All of which makes Zidane's resurgence in this World Cup, at age 34, something bordering on a miracle. He has already announced his retirement from soccer once this tournament is over. He already has a secure historical legacy. And yet in France's last two stunning victories -- over Spain in the second round and Saturday night over runaway favorite Brazil -- Zidane has somehow found the inspiration that we thought had been lost. His late goal against Spain brought a smile to any neutral observer's face, but his absolute command of the Brazil game was a reminder to everyone: When someone is the transcendent player of his generation, that makes him awfully special indeed. I couldn't help but think of Uncle Gérard watching the game in Briançon, nursing a red wine and screaming, "Genial!!!"

The term genius is not one to be taken lightly. How many true geniuses can one field produce in a lifetime? One? Three? A dozen? Soccer is no different. The last undisputed genius of fútbol was probably Diego Maradona. In my mind, Zidane has now joined him.

而除了烏克蘭之外，包括葡萄牙在內的七支隊伍都是近年來的熱門勁旅。

所以，雖然我極不喜歡澳洲隊（我想應該是跟他們教頭席丁克過去的資歷有關），但讀到The Australian專文中提及，澳洲隊中場格瑞拉Vince Grella在球隊懸念敗給帥哥隊後說了一句："If FIFA does not want us here, why don't they just say so and save us the hurt?"，還是讓人聞之鼻酸。

前八強中的德國對阿根廷和法國對巴西兩場賽事，在過去的比賽中已經是決賽等級的激戰了。方才阿根廷踢了全場好球，封鎖德國攻勢，最後卻在PK戰中敗北，還是無法扭轉宿命。根據統計，在德國隊主場上，阿根廷穿上客隊制服便無法踢贏德國。而這也是阿根廷首次在世界盃的PK戰中落敗。

至於法國對巴西這場呢？我想目前一面倒是賭巴西的贏面大吧。這個嗎，就像在籃球場和戰場上的美國一樣，足球場上的巴西幾乎是獨孤求敗，偏偏八年前就在決賽輸給了法國。何況本屆賽事中法國隊展現出遇弱則弱、遇強則強的韌性（好啦，我曉得是我一廂情願）。同一篇報導中也認為，嚷嚷著要退休又復出的席丹說不定跟另外一個「丹」喬丹一樣，最後會風風光光地以漂亮身影退休。

這，請拭目以待。

其中輾轉折磨的情節不言而喻。

同樣被<�＜我心狂野＞>選用的”Blue Spanish Sky”，也是我最喜愛的歌曲之一。年輕時常常想像一個人在萬里無雲的晴空下，心是如何漸漸乾涸的。此般情狀，唯有南方地帶的人們可以瞭解吧，例如地中海、南加州、或是打狗城。北邊一點的人，大概都忙著發霉、憂鬱或是長香港腳。

根據Chris的說法，這首歌其實跟Chet Baker有點淵源（話說回來，他們倆的造型還真像）。還有，他說：

該位仁兄寫過一本小說叫"Microserfs"，最新力作叫"J Pod"。這樣各位瞭解他是怎樣的人了吧。（該不會島內一堆Jxx的藝人也在打這個名字的主意吧？）

TIME: In JPod you compare Google to God. Why?

DC: Not so much Google itself, but the way you feel after using it really intensely for a long time. Suddenly you know the answer to everything. I used to be one of those people who was going through the reference section of the local library. I used to phone up Merriam-Webster in Springfield, Massachusetts — by the way, they loved it — and ask a question about a neologism or something. Now you just burn out on knowing the answer to everything. This is what God must be like knowing everything. How many times have I been in a restaurant and wanted to clap my hands and have Google come down from ceiling and solve an argument?

這段文字應該道出許多鬻文為生者的心聲吧。

看起來像是某一集比較好看的<<�星際大戰X>>，這玩意已經好萊塢化了的樣子。



我自己是不玩電玩的，唯一耐得下性子的這麼多年來也只有<<�模擬城市>>。頂多再加上個古早的<<�俄羅斯方塊>>。前幾天跟熊弟說到，人生若不是已走到一個百無聊賴的地步，我是不可能坐在銀幕前玩電動的。熊弟卻說，人生就是有趣的時候才會玩電動──或者是反過來說才對。橫豎我搞不懂。

成功嶺入伍訓的時候，隔壁床鄰兵每天晚上對我訴說<<�太空戰士>>每一代的故事，彷彿那是他家鄉那個已毀滅的星球唯一留下的歷史憑藉。也像是<<�天方夜譚>>裡的雪赫拉莎德Sheherazade，得靠著編織故事方能確保黎明來時得以苟延殘喘又一日。

那，就像故事裡說的，是另外一段故事了。

剛剛從巷口的電影院看完電影走回家。心底直嘀咕著，現在大家把法國吹捧成代表對抗美帝勢力的歐洲良心云云，恐怕只是一廂情願（高盧人也樂見其成）的幻象吧。

<<�殘骸密碼>>（L'empire des loups）一戲中有一景實在耐人尋味。淺髮的高盧英雄抱著土耳其美女殺手站在被子彈打得千瘡百孔的巨石聖像前，腳下是屍橫遍野的土耳其「恐怖分子」。最糟糕的是這次摧毀石像的甚至不是神學士，而是法國當代巨星尚雷諾（話說到這，尚雷諾那張臉恐怕也是當代法國影壇，唯一在好萊塢具有辨識度的吧？）

看來法國佬和米國媒體其實是站在同一陣線，他們的態度或許稱為”anti-Bush”會比較恰當。高盧雄雞其實比較不爽英雄被別人搶去當罷了。

我常覺得，當初沒因為討厭葛萊美獎而錯過Bonnie Raitt，實在是人生中很幸運的事。

若是沒有她，真不知道該怎麼度過許多了無生意的黑暗時刻。

只要聽到開頭隆隆的節奏，我就知道又能漸漸拾起勇氣，血液繼續從左心室流出心臟，打進流通全身肢體的血脈。

講得好像我常想自戕的樣子。有時候說不定只是吸收了過多的咖啡因吧。

又搞笑了，真不好意思。

我只是想表達，一生中能認識某些人、遇見某些事，上天實在待我不薄啊。

有沒有注意到，英文片名叫做”Heart Under Blade”？倭國人真是得人疼，不過他們認識的漢字也有限，難怪能這樣拆開來慢慢玩。

當年我還青春年少時，在海濱的圖書館辦了個系學會展，主題呼應當年熱門電影<�＜飲食男女＞>（其實是因為我愛吃……）-- 反正呢，兩個在樓上國際會議中心開完會的倭國教授經過會場，看到海報仔細端詳一會便開始竊笑。我上前盡責地介紹本次展覽的主題 – 才怪，當然是問他們在搞什麼鬼。教授這時點出「飲食男女」這四個字的奧妙，原來在他們的拆字理解中，這四個字讀起來像「飲」「食男」「女」，“man-eating woman” – 把男人拆食入腹的女子啊。

其實，我的人生中，從來沒有這樣一群人。也沒有人望著熟悉的風景時，會念著我興起「遍插茱萸少一人」的感慨。
